Course Title: Creating and Sewing a Skirt


Duration: 20 hours in 10 session

Class size: 12 students

Target age of students: 16 and above

Pre-requisition: N/A

Objective: For beginners to learn the basic designing and sewing skills in a short period of time. Focus on skirts.

Outline: Fashion Making (according to theme)
-Understanding different kind of fabric and accessories of clothing
- Basic knowledge of designing fabric pattern and designing skirts
- Knowledge of selecting material and its' consumption
- Application of sewing tools and machinery
-Understanding Pattern Paper
-Cutting technique
-Sewing technique
-Finishing and ironing technique

Skills Level: Beginner

Type of Learning: Psychomotor - manual or physical skills (Skills)

Marking Criteria:
This section defines the assessment criteria and the number of marks (subjective and objective)
awarded. The total number of marks for all assessment criteria must be 100.
A Cutting
B Measurements
C Overall appearance
D Quality of the skirt garment
E Creativity and construction of the design elements

Exercises: 1. Sew a basic skirt (mandatory, same style for all students)
2. Create and make a new design skirt

Material: sewing tools, sewing equipment (provide by school)
fabric and accessories (provide by students )

Facilities: Sewing Workshop, Computer Lab, sewing machines and tables, cutting tools and digital fabric printer

Session # 1

1. Ice-breaking and introduction

2. Briefing through the different content of the 10 session course....motivation

3. Introduction of different sewing tools and material




4. Demonstrating how to use an Industry Sewing Machine.
First step: How to thread an industry machine?



5. Student practice the threading procedures at least 5 times.

6. Pick a few students to check if they know what have taught in this session.

Homework: Memorize the vocabularies : different tools for sewing the garments.


Session # 2


1. Understanding the paper pattern of skirts





2. How to select the best fabric

3. Can use web 2.0 tools "Colour Lovers" to provide some inspiration

Homework: Request students to select the appropriate fabric for the skirt exercise and bring to the next class.

Session # 3


1. Introducing the procedures for cutting the skirt, showing the method of laying pattern onto the fabric.
How to cut fabric (Text : procedure)

2. Showing a video, a brief concept to the students


3. Teacher demo step to step

4. Students start cutting their own fabric

Homework: Request students to finish cutting the fabric at home and bring to the next class.

Session # 4

1. Make sure all the students have finished cutting their fabric

2. Practice using the sewing machine

3. Read through the procedures for sewing the skirt together

4. Demonstration : step by step

step 1: overlock all the panel.

5. Students practice , sew the cut selected fabric




Session # 5

1. Keep on sewing the skirt

Step 3: sew the zipper

Step 4: Sew the side seams

Step 5: Finish the waistband

Homework: Record down the procedure step by step

Session # 6

1. Keep on sewing the mandatory skirt

Step 6: sew the hooks and loops

Step 7: hand-sewn the hem
Step 8: Press (Iron) the skirt

2. Hand in the skirt for marking

Homework: Finish the skirt if incomplete during class.
Record down all the procedures of making the dress.

Session # 7

Class move to computer lab instead of sewing workshop


1. Introduce the web 2.0 tools for applying in design the skirt Color Lovers



2. Students use the tools to design the pattern for the fabric
3. Print the fabric using the digital printing machine


Homework: Come back to the lab before the next class to have the fabric (1.5 meter) printed for the next skirt exercise.

Session # 8

1. Check if all students printed their own design fabric

2. Lead students to cut the fabric

3. Discuss with students about their designed skirts, basic fashion theroy

4. Students start making the second exercise.

Homework: Students are encourage to come to the workshop during "open access sessions" to complete their artwork.

Session # 9

1. Final session for students to complete their masterpieces.

2. Consult students if necessary for their Critique.

3. Prepare display equipment for students, log down borrow utensils.




4. Remind students the marking criteria

Homework: Complete the design skirt and prepare for the presentation

Critique on the design and sewn dress according to the marking scheme:
